Ko Samui

Hello again! We are getting good at this updating regularly thing!
We are in Ko Samui, we arrived yesterday lunchtime. It was a long trip but it was nice, we splashed out and bought first class tickets for the train ride (which took 13 hours) the first class tickets meant we had a lockable compartment with bunk beds so we could sleep the trip away.. it was a bit expensive but well worth the money because we didnt have to worry about anyone stealing our stuff while we slept.
The train left Bangkok at 7pm on Saturday and didnt hit Surat Thani until 8am the next morning (it was supposed to be in at 6 but was running late) all the tourists heading to Ko Samui crammed into a tiny mini bus (luggage and all) and our crazy driver sped to the pier (the ferry had been waiting for the two hours that the train was late). The ferry was pretty nice, it had airconditioning which is always appreciated in this heat and tvs which played movies, the trip took about 4 hours. When we got to the island we caught another mini bus, we hadnt booked any accommodation so a tout drove us to the sea breeze bungalows to have a look at their rooms. It is right near the beach and is nice and cheap, the rooms arent wonderful but they have a bed and a shower and we were tired from our massive mission from Bangkok so that is where we are staying.

Last night we stayed in a more expensive room (because none of the cheap ones were left) but this morning we moved to a cheaper room. (I should note here that the 'expensive room' only cost us $12 for the night, the cheap one is around $8.50 for the both of us). We havent done much since we got here except relax and eat, thats pretty much the plan for today as well maybe tomorrow we will get organised to do some sight seeing! We had dinner last night on the beach which was awesome, there was a restaurant with tables along the beach and candles and fairy lights as the only lighting (that and the stars) we ate some beautiful thai food and had some cocktails and some beer, and the whole time we were there only 3 other tables were being used!!! it was so quiet! after dinner we were wandering down the beach back to our room and we found a (for lack of a better word) bar along the beach. basically it was a bunch of mats on the sand with little tables (shin height) with candles.. further up the beach was a wooden bar/table and an amplifier for music. There was noone there so we decided to sit down and have a beer (or lie down actually) we lay there for ages listening to reggae music and staring up at the stars.. it was insane and we have decided that its going to be our local while we are here. I just cant believe how quiet the beach is at night, especially considering how many tourists there are around! We guess they are all at the american style pubs and girlie bars.

Glynn has left us and headed off to London, we spent Friday with him in Bangkok before his flight, it was a pretty relaxing day, we had some lunch, saw a movie (the wedding crashers) and had a final Thailand beer with him. It was actually really sad to see him go, I guess he was our last attachment to home, it was excellent spending time with him here though!! After he left on Friday we went out with Gap and his work friends to a local bar where we ate lots of food (do you see a running theme here?) and listened to the locals sing Karaoke.. the highlight of the night was Gaps rendition of "I will Survive".. so funny!
After the Karoke we went with Gap to meet up with his friends - by this time it was 2am but they were at a restaurant eating and drinking - it never stops here! We didnt stay long because by this time we were exhausted so we went home to sleep. We are thinking of heading back to Bangkok for a couple of days in our travels to visit Gap and Co. again, but we will have to wait and see what happens.

Phew, I'm exhausted now! What an update!
Ok well, thats it for now, Luke and I are going to get some lunch!

From Mum in Rocky

Wow!! You saw an elephant!! A baby elephant!! Just walking along the street??!! How cool is that!? What a shame you didn't have your camera ... dammit. It all sounds so great and when I read your entries, I almost feel like I'm there and I can picture it all so clearly ... the beach thing sounds wonderful. 13 hours on a train, however, sounds like something I would NOT enjoy! Keep having fun and keep eating and drinking all the good stuff and keep telling us all about it. (I can't believe Barry left Jack unsupervised long enough for him to write you a message ... such an intelligent dog ... but so naughty!) I'm a bit concerned that Barry has too much time on his hands without me there! I love you and miss you both ... be safe! Mum xxxxxxxx

Re: From Mum in Rocky

Hi Mum in Rocky!
I hope everything is ok and you are having fun (or as much fun as you can be having) I have sent some postcards to Combara st so they should be there for you when you get home. Glad you are enjoying the updates. I am definently enjoying writing them, it makes the whole thing seem a little less surreal when I write about it for you guys! We are having so much fun! We got some photos of elephants today to make up for missing out on the baby elephant! I cant believe Jack was intelligent enought not just to reply to our message but to actually CREATE his own livejournal! I'm so proud! Love you lots mum, I should run and get started on the next update! xxxxx
